As Halloween approaches, The old Bryce Hospital sits empty, under construction. Tuscaloosa, Oct. 4, 2021.
Formerly known as the Alabama State Hospital for the Insane and opened in 1861, it is now owned by The University of Alabama and being converted into a Performing Arts Center. Bryce was once a shining example of inpatient psychiatric care before its decline and horrors that happened behind its walls. The eventual 33-year Wyatt vs. Stickney case that established humane standards for psychiatric care, known as the Wyatt Standards, began in Bryce.
